Pro Consumidor: basic necessity products have remained stable in recent weeks

Santo Domingo – The National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights (Pro Consumidor) reported that in the recent comparison of prices of the products of the basic food basket of the Dominican Republic, it has been possible to verify that most of the most consumed foods have remained stable in recent weeks.

The executive director of Pro Consumidor, Eddy Alcántara, explained that the vast majority of these products have maintained their prices, “and others have experienced discounts, mainly agricultural products.”

He said that the products that have had some upward fluctuation have been in a very minimal percentage, which he said “is the most favorable behavior of this year.”

According to the survey in large and small supermarkets, warehouses, markets, and grocery stores, “the fundamental products of the basic food basket have had a favorable behavior for the pockets of consumers.”

The official cited that beans, pork leg, garlic, powdered milk, processed chickens, eggs, fresh pork chop, sardines, green pigeon peas, soybean oil, yams, pineapple, and grapes are among the products whose prices have decreased in large supermarkets.

Prices of cassava, Marmalade Manicera, select rice, olive oil, eggplant, cubanela pepper, white potato, breast beef, and bell pepper, among others, have also decreased in large supermarkets.

Alcántara indicated that, according to the survey, the prices of green pigeon peas, white frying cheese, smoked chop, fresh chicken, oatmeal, salad tomato, red onion, yams, evaporated liquid milk, cassava, corn flour, salami, spaghetti, tomato paste, herring with bones, chocolate, and sardines have dropped in small supermarkets.

He said that in these small supermarkets, the prices of medium and large watermelon, Persian lemon, cherry, molondrón, beetroot, green chili pepper, beans, select rice, cucumber, milky, green bananas, and mango have also decreased.

Meanwhile, he said that in the markets, there had been a drop in prices of green bananas, superior rice, American yams, pinto beans, cassava, ripe bananas, yellow corn, medium bananas, white sweet potato, long beans, imported beans, and others.

He said that the stores have reduced the prices of creamer sugar, ground salt, coffee, corn flour, bottled water, and white sugar, among other items.

Regarding the behavior of sugar, the executive director of the consumer rights organization said that this product, which generated concern about eight weeks ago due to the increase it experienced, “has begun to register a trend towards the sincerity of its price.”

He said the behavior it has been recording lately shows that it has not had any upward fluctuation “but has begun a significant decline.”

Alcántara said in that order that it is expected that this product will be available for purchase in the next few days at the prices established by resolution of the Dominican Sugar Institute (INAZUCAR).

Will Pro Consumidor issue a report after 30 days of basic price increases. Can we expect 30 days after the election the prices will increase?
