Minister Bisonó welcomes U.S. Under Secretary of State José W. Fernández

Santo Domingo.- The Minister of Industry, Commerce, and MSMEs, Víctor -Ito- Bisonó, hosted U.S. Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and Environment, José W. Fernández, at the MICM headquarters. This significant visit led to a productive meeting focused on crucial economic development issues for both nations.

The discussions, which included the Director General of Customs, Eduardo Sanz Lovatón, and the Deputy Director of the Dominican Port Authority, Alan Checo, highlighted the Dominican Republic’s potential as a nearshoring destination. This strategy aims to attract companies seeking to move operations closer to North American markets amidst current global economic conditions.

A key topic was the potential for attracting investments in the semiconductor sector. Minister Bisonó thanked Undersecretary Fernández for his support in this high-tech industry, emphasizing the country’s focus on the supply, cutting, testing, and packaging stages of semiconductors and the manufacturing of printed circuit boards. This aligns with President Luis Abinader’s decree prioritizing the development of the semiconductor industry, showcasing the government’s commitment to this strategic sector.

Additionally, the officials discussed the importance of secure port operations within the nearshoring framework and the vital role of the Alliance for Development in Democracy (ADD) in enhancing regional cooperation, investment, and sustainable economic growth. The visit underscored the mutual commitment to strengthen bilateral relations and promote sustainable economic growth between the Dominican Republic and the United States.
