Soldiers nab people traffickers, seize big guns

SANTIAGO. – Dominican soldiers on Tuesday arrested 12 alleged people traffickers while trying to smuggle more than 150 undocumented Haitians in several areas of the northwest region.

The undocumented Haitians, who paid as much as 4,000 pesos for the trip each, were also detained and handed over to Immigration Agency inspectors, while the alleged traffickers are being held in the military installation in the city of Santiago.

Army Commander in Santiago Jose Francisco Gil Ramirez said the random checks on the Luperón road and Guayacanes crossing also led to the confiscation of high caliber guns, drugs, bundles of garments and other merchandise.
