Dominican Police Colonel’s murder opens major scandal

Santo Domingo.- The murder of lieutenant colonel Virgilio Casilla Minaya, gunned by alleged hired killers Friday night in the presence of his wife and a 10 year old daughter, opens another major scandal in the National Police, after the chief Jose A. Polanco revealed that the officer had been working in different cases of extortion and fraud involving several of its members.

Only two people are being held for questioning in the murder, which rocked the sector where Casilla lived.

The lieutenant colonel, who belonged to the Police Internal Affairs Division, was also accompanied by his brother at the time of his death.

Radhamés Segura, a senior member of the ruling PLD party who spoke in the name of the officer’s relatives, said he’s confident the Police will find those behind the horrible crime.

Casilla’s colleagues said he was a dedicated, hardworking and honest man who wore the police uniform with pride.

He as buried with full honors yesterday in a cemetery in the outskirts of the capital.
