Dominican founder shelters Occupy Wall Street group

NEW YORK.- The statue of Dominican Republic’s founding father, Juan Pablo Duarte yesterday became the rallying point for the hundreds of demonstrators of the movement Occupy Wall Street, after police evicted them from Zuccotti Park in New York’s financial district.

In Duarte Square on 6th Av. and Canal street, near Chinatown, the police also arrested hundreds of others, mostly for disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and others of even attacking uniformed agents.

Using plastic cuffs, shields and batons hundreds of riot police surrounded the small square dedicated to Duarte, and forced the demonstrators to leave the zone.

The clash came at 1pm when Sanitation del Department crews began “disinfecting” Zuccotti Park, and the ensuing scuffles.
