Haiti, Dominican Republic mark two years since quake with new university

Port-au-Prince.- Dominican Republic and Haiti will mark the second anniversary of the quake of January 12, 2010, today Thursday, in the site where the Dominican State built an university it donated to its neighbor as a gesture of solidarity, two years after the island’s worse catastrophe in a century.

Haiti president Michel Martelly and Dominican par Leonel Fernandez are slated to arrive in Limonade, 15 kilometers south of Cape Haitien, in Haiti’s north, where the Dominican Government and the private sector built the university complex at a cost of more than US$30 million.

On Monday Martelly thanked the Dominican Government’s “willingness to cooperate for a better Haiti on the island.”

“President Fernandez has demonstrated it with the university, by sending a delegation in each crisis, with his help after the earthquake,” Martelly said, quoted by newspaper Listin Diario.
