Police Chief admits agents’ “excesses”
Santo Domingo.- National Police chief Jose A. Polanco yesterday admitted that agents have committed excesses in some of the cases of deaths and tortures denounced by human rights organizations.
He affirmed that measures are being taken with those agents and the investigations continue in other cases. He said an investigation was conducted after the denunciation, on which the excesses of several police agents were confirmed.
Polanco said the agents are sometimes forced to exert excessive force when they confront criminals, although, she said, to have of the institution is velar by the security of the citizens.
The Human Rights Commission president Manuel Maria Mercedes last week denounced that at least nine people have died at the hands of Police agents thus far this of year, and vowed to take the denunciations to organizations such as Amnesty International, and Human Rights Watch.
