Naval Auxiliaries join search for boatpeople, one rescued

Santo Domingo. – Dominican Naval Auxiliaries (AND) actively participated in the operation to search for and rescue the boatpeople whose makeshift craft sank in Samaná Bay Saturday.

The group of civilian volunteers that helps the Dominican Navy in non-military efforts quickly deployed three boats and two airplanes to join the operation, once news of the tragedy broke.

In an emailed statement AND National Commodore and business leader Jose Antonio Najri affirmed that an Auxiliaries craft captained by its member Jesus Feris saved at least one of the shipwreck victims from dying, and handed over to the Navy.
