Presidential campaign has its first fatality
Santo Domingo. – The first fatality in Dominican Republic’s unusually calm presidential election campaign occurred Sunday, when a man shot another dead with one hurt amid a hail of bullets and stones between supporters of the opposition PRD, and of the ruling PLD parties in San Victor, Espaillat province (central).
PRD member Antonio Peña Ramos, 45, resident of San Victor, was in a banner waving rally in front of the Police station on the Jamao highway where both parties greeted vacationers returning from the Atlantic coast.
According to reports, the confrontation escalated from hurling stones, to bottles and then gunfire, which also injured PLD member Diógenes Matos, 30.
