Protesters demand repairs on road to tourist towns, threaten blockade

Hato Mayor, Dominican Republic.- Various organizations are staging a walkout Wednesday in the municipal districts San Francisco and Vicentillo to demand repairs on the highway linking it to the provincial capital, snarling traffic, closing schools and halting business activities in several towns.

Police agents and Army troops led by colonel Alfredo Dominguez were deployed along the road’s 18 kilometers prevent the strikers from halting traffic in the region, that includes the tourist towns of Sabana de la Mar and Miches.

Vicentillo parish priest Jesus Faustino Peguero warned that if the authorities of El Seibo province failed to come to the town on Wednesday morning, the protesters would block the road.
