Opposition deputies say internal murder plot targets their party’s president

Santo Domingo.- A group of deputies of Dominican Republic’s major oppositon party affirmed Tuesday afternoon that they’ve uncovered a plot to assassinate that organization’s president Miguel Vargas Maldonado.

Headed by Aquiles Ledesma, seven PRD deputies said former Legal Adviser during Hipolito Mejia’s Presidency, Guido Gomez Mazara, is heard discussing the alleged plot with another senior PRD leader, Leo Adames.

“What has to be done is to kill him, they know what they’re risking,” Mazara allegedly told Adames, in reference to the PRD president.

“We are many lawmakers who will put a stop to any attempt against our companion Miguel Vargas Maldonadto,” Ledesma said in a press conference in the Hotel Santo Domingo in the capital, accompanied by the also senior leaders and deputies Victor Gomez Casanova, Vida de León, Isidro Rosario, Fiquito Vásquez and Manny González.

The lawmaker for Barahona Province handed out to the press the contents of the alleged taped conversation and other documents he affirms prove Mazara’s and Adames’ intent.
