The US asks Dom. Rep. to extradite 20 people

Santo Domingo. – Justice vice minister Gisela Cueto revealed Thursday that the United States has requested 20 people in extradition at yearend 2011, for drug trafficking, homicide, fraud and money laundering cases and other crimes.

She said the Justice Ministry’s Extradition Department studies the files to determine if they should be submitted to the Supreme Court. "We’re checking the documents to determine if they’re complete enough for empowerment."

Cueto said six people agreed to extradition thus far this year, among them Victor Santana, Argelis Moisés and the Kelvins Antonio Bretón, wanted in New York charged with forming part of a network which trafficked cocaine, heroin and ecstasy.

The official also cited the case of the Frenchman Pascal Cardit, who skipped bail, changed his name and fled towards Dominican Republic after being sentence in to 20 years in France.

On May 14 the Supreme Court is scheduled to rule on two extradition; Ange Guridy Cabral charged with homicide and Jose Antonio Contreras on drug trafficking.
