Dominican Government scrambles on powerful truckers union’s strike threat

Santo Domingo.- The powerful truckers union Fenatrado’s threat of halting operations the country’s ports “by force” today and tomorrow has prompted the Dominican Government’s guarantees that those facilities will work unhindered.

Port Security (Cesep) director Luis Lee Ballester said he has all the agents and equipment necessary to guarantee the free transport and commercial activities inside and outside the harbor zones. “We have sufficient response capacity to deal with all threats to Dominican Republic’s harbor system. We have our contingency plan activated to guarantee that things continue as they are.”

Armed Forces minister Joaquin Virgilio Perez also announced a plan to prevent incidents, if the strike materializes with the integration of all intelligence agencies.

He said members of the military Intelligence (J-2), the National Investigations Department (DNI), the National Police, Metropolitan Transit Authority, Customs Intelligence and the Port Authority will work jointly with the Cesep.
