Dominican churches want a halt to campaign violence

Santo Domingo. – After stating their concern for the often incendiary language which the campaign’s final leg has taken, several representatives of the Catholic and Evangelical churches and the president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) yesterday called on the political leadership to avert the acts of violence during rallies and other activities.

The cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez, Pontifical Catholic University director monsignor Agripino Núñez and JCE president Roberto Rosario and Evangelical Confederation president Fidel Lorenzo Merán urged the political leaders to maintain greater sanity and tranquility of spirit during the rest of the process.

In a statement, they asked the use of the political leadership’s authority to prevent that their rank and file attend rallies and activists bearing weapons and drinking alcohol, to avert confrontations.
