Military, police intimidate opposition party, its candidate says

Santo Domingo.- Opposition PRD party presidential candidate Hipólito Mejía yesterday vowed to denounce to the Organization of American States (OAS) the official sector’s alleged use of the military and police to intimidate his party’s leaders.

He said some of the alleged actions by members of the Armed Forces and Police to pressure and intimidate occur in the provinces, and expects that other actions of that type will be seen in the next few days.

"It’s you, the delegates in the polling places who are the ones who must make sure that things are done well there, regardless of the blackmail, the fear that is going to appear in the next few days. In the next days they’ll begin to strike fear in all the impoverished places so people don’t go and are going to throw even their little bomb," he said in a rally with teachers.

Mejía said as in the biblical passage when David defeated Goliath, “we’re going to resist with stoicism and we’re going to win in the first ballot."
