In a first, Chinese community voices support for presidential candidate

Santo Domingo.- In an unprecedented development during a presidential election campaign, Dominican Republic’s Chinese community announced its support for ruling PLD party candidate Danilo Medina, in a gathering where they submitted a list of their demands.

In the rally held in the Barrio Chino restaurant Suquin Fung, the Chinese-Dominicans asked Medina to make it easier for Chinese investments in the country, bolster trade and cultural ties with their native country, and reunite families by allowing them to bring their relatives, and create a Chinese cultural center.

Medina immediately pledged compliance with the demands, noting that it will be easy to do, since in his view the Chinese is a hardworking community which has contributed to economic growth and isn’t conflictive.

An estimated 30,000 Chinese and Chinese-Dominicans live in the country, said Yury Chez citing the 2010 census, adding that they’ve invested more than RD$500.0 million in the Barrio Chino.
