Hours of tension spur rumors on the Web

Santo Domingo.- An alleged call for the members of the opposition PRD party to mobilize in the streets spread quickly in the social networks Tuesday afternoon, further stoked by an announcement to place the military and police on alert.

The alleged burning of tires in barrios near the Central Electoral Board headquarters also proved to be just "blowing smoke."

Hours of tension preceded PRD ex candidate Hipólito Mejía’s televised speech, which many rumors on the Web said it would be a call to reject the results of the elections.

The tension led some small businesses, grocery stores and betting parlors to shutter their doors.
