Pope Benedict taps new local bishop

Santo Domingo.- Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the resignation of Dominican Jesus Maria of Jesus Moya as Bishop of the of San Francisco de Macorís Diocese for reasons of age, the Vatican said today in a statement.

It announced that he De Jesus’ successor will be the also Dominican Fausto Ramon Mejia Vallejo, current head of Santo Domingo’s Cibao Catholic University of Technology (UCATECI).

Throughout his career de Jesus was known for taking tough stances against government abuse.

Catholic bishops submit their resignation for the Pontiff’s consideration when they turn 75.
