Opposition party left homeless for the third time

Santo Domingo.- For the third time since founded in 1939 Dominican Republic’s major opposition party (PRD) has been left homeless as the result of internal struggles, the latest of which pits former president Hipolito Mejia and the organization’s president Miguel Vargas.

The building which houses the PRD was shuttered Monday afternoon "with bolts and chains," where even its employees have to announce themselves through a window and wait for security to authorize entry.

PRD general secretary Orlando Jorge and other senior leaders were prevented from entering yesterday and those already at their desks were told they had to leave their posts and hand over the keys.

The building’s security guards reportedly have orders bar entry to Jorge, PRD Organizational secretary Geanilda Vasquez and other senior leaders.

The PRD has previously lost its headquarters after the division of 1973 when PRD founder Juan Bosch left and founded the now ruling PLD party, and in the late 1990s when its ex president Hatuey Decamps left to found the PRSD and kept the offices.
