Dominicans mark fatal, heroic date

Santo Domingo.- A background voice in a striking tone stresses the long-yearned for democracy which the country needed as freedom was slipping further away during Trujillo’s 30-year reign of terror

A somber ambience prevails in the Memorial Hall of the Heroes of Constanza, Maimon and Estero Hondo, where the 53rd anniversary of the failed invasion of June 14, 1959, is commemorated today.

Sprinkled with images of the revolutionary saga, the hall located in the Centro de los Heroes station of the city’s first subway line, transports visitors to the battled scenes and invites them to envisage the carnage which ensued agsint the 198 courageous men who formed the Dominican Liberation Army, of which only seven survived: "Praise the brave expeditionaries of June 1959, who fought against the Trujillo dictatorship…"
