Opposition party president wins another court round amid calls for unity

SANTO DOMINGO. – The Superior Electoral Court (TSE) annulled resolutions adopted by the opposition PRD party’s Political Commission which had suspended Miguel Vargas as the organization’s president, together with other senior leaders and expelled other leaders in that faction.

The ruling comes as various sectors have called on the PRD leadership to seek ways to mend their differences, stoked by accusations from both factions since the May 20 electoral defeat.

Two weeks ago the TSE also revoked the Political Committee’s call to ratify the decision, declaring it without any legal force.

The high court ruled for Vargas’ request to strike several resolutions by the Political Committee, headed by former PRD presidential candidate Hipolito Mejia.
