Hundreds picket Congress in “mourning” for murdered women

Santo Domingo.- Hundreds of people gathered in front of Congress Wednesday to support a "Day of Mourning" for the nearly 100 women murdered by their partners or ex partners thus far this year, an activity convened by more than 60 organizations.

With the slogan "Femicide, tragedy and national emergency" the participants dressed in black and white began gathering outside the Congress8am, when the chanted “stop the violence against women.”

Women and Health Collective president Sergia Galvan thanked the citizens for their support, and said she expects the authorities to respond likewise.

The organizers delivered a document to Chamber of Deputies Gender Commission chair Magda Rodriguez, which demands a higher budget to fight gender violence with prevention programs, improving the quality of services and legislation aimed at reducing aggression against women.
