Boycott on chicken is on, farmers cry foul

SANTO DOMINGO.- Poultry farmers returned to the Chamber of Deputies to defend their position in the row pitting them against consumers over the price of chicken, affirming that it is “fair and proper.”

Meanwhile at least 21 community and consumer groups asked support for today’s call "a day without eating chicken," to press retailers, butcher shops, supermarkets and convenience stores to cut the meat’s price.

Consumers say a pound of chicken at RD$45 and RD$55 is too high, whereas poultry producer Bolivar Cartagena reiterated in his visit to Congress that RD$29 per pound at the farm is fair and proper, noting that the problem is with the distribution chain, which in his view is very extended.
