Dominican fishermen rescue 15 Cubans heading to Miami

PUERTO PLATA. – Dominican fisherman aboard the boat JUANA VI have rescued 15 Cubans in recent weeks after their rafts went adrift in the Atlantic Ocean, from where the first group had planned to reach Miami.

In the most recent case six Cubans arrived at the local port Tuesday aboard the fishing boat SHEYLA, whose crew rescued the boat people suffering from dehydration.

The Cubans Joseph Alexis Rodriguez, Rafael Garcia, Ernesto Garcia, Eirán Israel Suarez, Jose Rafael Lazo, and Julio Cesar Peña were rescued Wednesday the 11th at 22 degrees North latitude, 76 degrees west longitude.

The Cuban boat told elnuevodiario.com.do they were headed to Florida illegally, setting a course from eastern Holguin province on July 2, aboard a raft which went adrift when its engine failed.
