Dominican lawmakers crop number of generals from 300 to 40

Santo Domingo.- The Senate yesterday amended the Armed Forces Statutory Law, which cuts the number of generals in the military branches from 300 to 40, and changes the names of the National Army to the Dominican Army, and the Navy of War to the Dominican Navy.

The legislation which had already been approved Tuesday in the Chamber of Deputies stipulates 20 generals in the Army, 10 in the Navy and 10 in the Air Force.

The legislation also creates the post of “Joint Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces" (chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff), who will be number two in command, above the deputy ministers currently representing the three branches.
