Catholic Church trusts Medina will fight government corruption

SANTO DOMINGO.- Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez trusts president Danilo Medina to attack government corruption and said the chief executive should be given the chance to prove with deeds what he promised in his proclamation speech. "Give him a chance to prove with facts what he promised in his speech, I’d prefer to wait and confide that it will be so."

In this regard the prelate said the President had been prepared to hold this post, but stressed that Tropical Storm Isaac’s passing near the country "may test his ability to improvise solutions."

The Cardinal said Medina should be trusted, "until such time that he doesn’t show a willingness to confront it (corruption)." He said there are "old" evils because they haven’t been dealt with swiftly.

Santo Domingo’s Archbishop spoke during a news conference to unveil the draft to amend Law 139-97, which if passed would keep Juan Pablo Duarte’s birth date on January 26, and the Epiphany on January 6.
