The government will continue fuel subsidy for buses until year end

Santo Domingo.- The government decided to continue the fuel subsidy for buses until December 31, Industry and Commerce Minister Jose del Castillo affirmed Monday.

In last week’s meeting of the Cabinet it was decided to implement a series of austerity measures to cut government spending, and tackle the fiscal deficit currently at more than 90 billion pesos.

The halt to the fuel subsidy was among the measures expected, and which the government has been prociding the public transport sectors for several years. The subsidy is also provided to several industries.

As part of his announcement del Castillo said the government’s decision to keep the fuel subsidy for buses was adopted to avert higher fares, as bus owners’ unions had warned.
