Few patrols stoke fear of assaults on the Eastern Highway

Santo Domingo.- The Police have left motorists to fend for themselves on the stretch of the Eastern Highway leading to Juan Dolio, Bavaro and Punta Cana, despite reports of assaults against travelers who arrive at Las Americas Airport.

Two permanent patrols were set up from the Las Americas Highway toll station to the airport access road, in the heels of the U.S. Embassy’s advisory to its citizens on highway robberies against travelers leaving the terminal and on the Duarte Highway.

Although Policehave increased the number agents assigned to the area, those who go beyond the perimeter complain of seeing few patrols.

The fear of using the eastern highway spreads among no only local and foreign travelers, but also motorists and drivers of heavy vehicles who transport goods to the tourism resorts.
