Agents arrest fugitive charged with rape, theft in New York

LA ROMANA, Dominican Republic.- The National Drugs Control Agency (DNCD) today announced the Tuesday night arrest of a fugitive wanted by the New York Supreme Court on charges of rape and armed robbery.

It said Francisco Guillermo Miranda was immediately taken to DNCD headquarters in Santo Domingo, where he’ll be kept until the Supreme Court rules on the extradition request.

It said DNCD special Investigators arrested Miranda on a Supreme Court bench warrant issued on July 13, at the request of the Justice Ministry’s Intentional Extraditions Department.

In Santo Domingo, DNCD spokesman Roberto Lebron said the suspect is charged with 10 counts of grand theft, sexual assault, possession of a firearm and possession of stolen property, among other violations on May 9, 2009.

“This individual is accused of sexually assaulting the young American Kathleen McHugh, in New York City, which is why that jurisdiction’s prosecutors filed the charges, but the accused managed to escape to the Dominican Republic.”
