RD$500M embezzlement case roils once powerful party

Santo Domingo. – A senior leader of the once powerful PRSC party asked its general secretary Ramon Rogelio Genao to resign from the post to personally assume the defense of La Altagracia province senator Amable Aristy, who’s been charged with embezzling hundreds of millions of pesos during his 12-year tenure as head of the Dominican Municipal League (LMD).

PRSC Political Committee member Humberto Salazar said Genao’s defense of Aristy contradicts the party line. "We encourage Genao to assume the Party’s official position regarding Aristy’s expulsion for high treason or resign his position and personally defend his friend, without using the party leadership’s good name."

He said the PRSC supports Justice minister Francisco Dominguez’s initiative to reopen the case against Aristy, after an Accounts Chamber audit revealed that more than RD$500 million were embezzled from the LMD.
