Authorities seize over 22,000 pounds of illegal drugs in 2012

Santo Domingo.– The National Drugs Control Agency (DNCD) said it seized over 22,046 pounds of illegal drugs in 2012, while more than 27,000 people have been arrested on drug-related charges this year.

According to DNCD spokesman Roberto Lebron, agents carried out about 28,000 antinarcotics operations during the year. He said it was the third consecutive year of dramatic increases in the amount of drugs seized by antinarcotics agents.

The number of flights has dropped significantly, since employing Super Tucano aircraft, leading agents to focus on shipments by sea. "This is the result of several institutions working together, such as the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Armed Forces and the National Police," Lebron pointed out.
