Ousted ex President to defy opposition party’s purge

Santo Domingo.- Dozens of opposition PRD party leaders who support former president Hipolito Mejia are meeting at the José Francisco Peña Gómez Institute, prior to a press conference to announce their position on Monday’s night expulsions of Mejia and acting president Andres Bautista, and the 2-year suspension of Geanilda Vasquez and Orlando Jorge.

Mejía is meeting behind closed doors with senior leaders Ivelisse Prats, Janet Camilo, Jesus Vasquez, Andres Bautista, Rafael-Fafa-Taveras, among others

Upon arrival at the Institute on Bolivar Av., those present greeted Mejía with a standing ovation, while several leaders said they dare PRD president Miguel Vargas to convene the party’s Political Commission, "for him to see he’s alone."

The PRD, Dominican Republic’s major opposition party, has withstood major purges since coming to the country in 1962.
