Activity commemorates death of April 1965 Revolution hero

Santo Domingo.- Culture minister José Antonio Rodríguez will head the "Cultural event in honor of Colonel Francisco Alberto Caamaño Deño" today, to mark the 40th anniversary of his execution at Loma de Nizao, San José de Ocoa (south).

Caamaño, who headed the April 1965 Revolution, died February 16, 1973, shortly after arriving from Cuba leading a guerrilla group, and according to testimony by eye witnesses, was executed after being captured by troops in combat.

The activity cohosted by the Caamaño Foundation and Culture is slated for El Conde Street, site of Caamaño’s government headquarters during the Revolution, and will feature performances by famed troubadours.

The Legislative Branch and the Executive recently passed into law the transfer of his remains to the National Pantheon.
