Ex president’s attorneys ask to discard criminal charges
Santo Domingo.- Attorneys of former president Leonel Fernandez on Tuesday asked National District prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso to discard the criminal charges filed by Al-Pais party president Guillermo Moreno.
In a statement, Abel Rodriguez del Orbe, Radhames Jimenez, Marino Feliz, Miguel Valerio, Juan Antonio Delgado and Ramon Emilio Nuñez claim that the allegations against the former president don’t constitute criminal offenses.
The National District Office of the Prosecutor had notified Fernandez to respond to the charges within 15 days, but his lawyers argue that the complaint violates banking secrecy, when it obtained checks without authorization and disclosed them in the file.
The attorneys called the charges an unsubstantiated complaint, because in their view, doesn’t specify a criminal offense.
Among other violations, Moreno accused Fernandez, also president of the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (FUNGLODE) of money laundering and malfeasance.
