Obama eyes son of Dominicans for Labor Secretary

Washington.- President Barack Obama is ready to appoint Thomas Perez of Dominican parents, as the next U.S. Labor Secretary, said people close to the discussions at the White House, quoted by local media.

Perez, 51, has led the Justice Department’s Human Rights Division since 2009 and was previously labor secretary of in the state of Maryland.

He’s expected to receive strong backing from unions and the Hispanic community, which seeks to be represented in Obama’s cabinet.

Perez’s appointment could be formalized as soon as today, said those familiar with the selection process.
