55% of Dominicans support gay unions; legal marriage only 21.4%

Santo Domingo.- Some kind of union among homosexual couples has the support of 55% of Dominicans, but only 21.4% agree with a legal marriage, revealed a survey by Newlink for the radio program Cuentas Claras.

Among those who reject gay marriage, the pollster found that 50.1% oppose it noting that a traditional marriage is between a man and a woman, 23.5% said they reject it on religious beliefs while 22.6% say it would have negative effects on society.

Newlink polled 1,023 men and women between 18 and 65, who say that despite their support for to some kind of homosexual union, 80.2% oppose adoptions or foster care of children by same-sex couples, compared with 19.8% which favors the new family nucleus.

It also found that people with no religious inclination or nonbelievers tend to support the adopt ion of children by gay couples.

The survey said 67 percent of Catholics favor some kind of homosexual union.
