Medina aghast in surprise visit to notorious hospital

SantoDomingo.- President Danilo Medina’s unannouncedvisit to the notorious Dario Contreras Trauma Hospital turned into an ironic surpriseThursday, when in a tour of the facilitysaw how patients are treated under conditions of squalor.

Hospitaldirector Dario Mañon said Medina’s first request was to see the patients’ bathrooms,and then visited the various wings.

According Mañon,upon leaving the facility, Medina said the hospital needs to be transformed andremodeled, adding that one room cannot be shared by 10 patients, "it isvery outdated."

The officialadded that the President also wondered how more patients don’t die given the hospital’scondition.
