Ex-convicts hail Medina’s pledge to help them get jobs

Santo Domingo.- Dominicans deported from the United States hailed president Danilo Medina’s request for Barack Obama’s help with reinserting deported ex-convicts to the labor market.

They say the need the government’s help because while many of them want to work, society rejects them for being ex-cons.

Quoted by listin.com.do, Jose Mejia, one of 69 deported ex-cons who arrived at Las Americas airport Tuesday after serving sentences in the U.S., said "it’s good for us to get work here, otherwise, what are we going to live on if we can’t work."

"I hope it is true that the government will help us," the ex-con said as Immigration agents escorted him to a bus at Las Americas.

Ricardo Sanchez, another ex-con, said he’s glad that Medina is concerned with the deportees.

Dominican Ambassador in Washington Anibal de Castro two weeks ago revealed Medina’s request for U.S. support for jobs program to help deported Dominicans.
