Coconut plant ordered to pay more than 100 Haitian workers

San Cristobal, Dom. Rep. – The San Cristobal District Labor Court on Tuesday ruled for the more than 100 Haitian coconut plant workers and against their former employer, just two months after the plaintiffs occupied the front of the Labor Ministry to demand wages owed by the owner who claimed his company went bankrupt.

The company Coquera Kilometro 5 was ordered to pay more than RD$15 million in compensation, after the Court rejected a defense motion for dismissal.

Presiding Judge Melania de la Cruz handed down ruling 86-2013 which orders the payment of employment benefits for the plaintiffs, in addition to damages for the employer’s failing to register the Haitians in Social Security.
