No incidents at Dominican-Haiti border market, after tense Friday

Dajabón, Dominican Republic. – The binational market on the Dominican side of the border with Haiti opened without incidents Monday, after tensions flared Friday over Port-au-Prince’s ban on imports of chicken meat and eggs.

Merchants from Ouanaminthe, Haiti decided to cross into Dajabón, where a sort of truce was agreed to with their Dominican counterparts, to allow the entry of around 15,000 buyers to purchase diverse products.

The merchants’ truce comes after Dajabon businesses shuttered their doors Friday to protest the poultry ban.

The merchants also agreed to a meeting to discuss Haitians’ allegations including shakedowns by Dominican Border Security (Cesfront) agents.
