Police chief wants jail without bail for illegal guns

Santo Domingo.- National Police chief Manuel Castro called for jailing without bail, people who carry weapons illegally, and as a way to counter confront the wave of murders by gunmen.

"There are many criminals who are arrested and regain their freedom, those criminals are those who use weapons indiscriminately when committing their holdups," he said.

He said he’ll meet with Armed Forces minister Sigfrido Pared today to adopt the measures necessary to apprehend and bring to justice the people who carry guns illegally.

Castro denied that the killings of at least six officers in recent days are part of a plan to mar his tenure, and instead called them "random criminal acts."
