Court wins buoy opposition party leader to snub rival

Santo Domingo.- The president of Dominican Republic’s major opposition party (PRD) denied on Wednesday that he has received or is expecting any counterproposal from the faction headed by former president Hipolito Mejia, noting that to address such an initiative, he himself would have to make ??a proposal, which he affirms hasn’t occurred.

Miguel Vargas’s statement comes after a series of court victories over the PRD’s control, at Mejia’s expense.

said before last Thursday’s National Executive Committee meeting (CEN), he was trying to agree on some points for its agenda, but "unfortunately" the myriad interests and opinions he says prevail in that group, cast his effort asunder.

"There seems to be some confusion on this, they’re probably talking about proposals and counterproposals being made between some subgroups, but the PRD leadership hasn’t made ??any proposal, so we aren’t expecting to receive any counterproposal," he said.

Vargas added that what everyone should do is promote the institutional agenda approved by the CEN, which he affirms will strengthen the party and lead to its victory in the 2016 congressional, municipal and presidential elections.
