First major bank fraud convict ordered back to prison

Santo Domingo.- A National District judge on Wednesday issued an arrest warrant against Leonel Almonte, sentenced to 15 years in prison, convicted in the collapse of Banco Universal, the country’s first major bank fraud case.

Sentencing Judge Saulo Isabel Diaz issued arrest warrant 822-2013, to apprehend and escort Almonte and exit, to be conducted by the court, since it is as fugitive from justice.

The judge’s ruling, which includes a ban from leaving the country, ??came at the request of three of the defrauded depositors in the collapsed bank, Cristian and Rosa Caraballo and Reynilda del Carmen Rodriguez.
