Puerto Plata schools are vulnerable to earthquakes

Puerto Plata.– Ten years after the 6.5 earthquake that hit Puerto Plata, causing loss of life and damage, a study found that 62% of schools in this northern province are vulnerable to earthquakes due to the lack of requirements for seismic zones.

The research, sponsored by the United Nations Program for Development (PNUD), the Seismic Evaluation and Infrastructure and Buildings Vulnerability Office (ONESVIE), and other entities, also found that only two of 11 hospitals meet seismic requirements, while the rest would not bear an 7.0 earthquake.

The study was presented at Playa Dorada’s Gran Ventana Hotel, during the conference "Puerto Plata: 10 years after the earthquake."
