All newborns in hospitals to get a permanent ID

Santo Domingo.- Children born in the country’s hospitals, including foreigners, will be released with their birth certificate and permanent ID number, which will be their cedula as adults, the Central Electoral Board (JCE) and Public Health Ministry announced Tuesday.

JCE president Roberto Rosario and Public Health minister Freddy Hidalgo said the system will be operational soon and includes child-bearing minors and adults which haven’t been declared.

In a National Palace press conference, the officials said the mechanism will also be applied to newborns of foreigners in the country, after registry in the ‘book of aliens’.

Hidalgo and Rosario provided the details after meeting with Presidency chief of staff Gustavo Montalvo.
