The ruling party has its own powerful “NATO”

Santo Domingo.- As Dominican Republic’s ruling party’s (PLD) Presidency hopefuls start their run for the Palace, its "NATO,"(OTAN) the nickname for its top leaders, is called to play a role to balance the organization founded by Juan Bosch in December 15, 1973.

And although "NATO’s" members, who’ve controlled the PLD’s internal workings for nearly a decade, have no visible leader or no rules, they show mutual respect and consideration.

Outlet eldia.com.do reports that Its members can also eat and have drinks at the meetings held almost religiously each Monday if they wish, but their main objective is of a political nature.

According to analysis, the two factions: leonelism, headed by former president Leonel Fernández and danilism, by president Danilo Medina, need the political balance provided by the party’s "NATO."

Its members are almost guaranteed a cabinet-level position in PLD administrations,

In addition to Medina and Fernandez, the political Committee’s members also believed to form part of “NATO” are Alejandrina German, Cesar Pina Toribio, Alma Fernández, Rafael Alburquerque, Reinaldo Pared, José Ramón Fadul, Ramón Ventura, Francisco Javier García, Euclides Gutiérrez and Bautista Rojas.
