Business leader urges explanations to CARICOM on immigrants row

Santo Domingo.- The president of the Roundtable of Commonwealth Countries in the Dominican Republic urged the Dominican Government to explain to the leaders of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) nations, regarding the measures taken aimed at regulating the influx of immigrants.

Fernando Gonzalez Nicolas said a missive should be sent directly to St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Ralf Gonsalves, to explain the nature of the Government measures on immigration. “The measures taken have apparently been badly misinterpreted.”

In a statement emailed Thursday, the business leader said the tone of Gonzalves’ request expel Dominican Republic from the CARICOM, Cariforum and Petrocaribe is cause for concern. “It’s therefore convenient for Dominican interests to carry out the efforts necessary to clarify the Dominican position to the Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.”

He said another issue that must be taken into account is the fact that Gonzalves is expected to become CARICOM Chairman on January.
