Ku Klux Klan in Dominican Carnaval not a problem: Culture

Santo Domingo.- The Ministry of Culture on Tuesday said each troupe "is free to choose" a theme in the Carnaval, in response to wide rebuke for the group wearing Ku Klux Klan (KKK) garb which paraded in the annual event held Sunday.

On Twitter Culture said that the troupe wearing KKK costumes "took part in the historical category. "There are topics such as independence, slavery, racism, etc."

"The historical category represents characters, costumes and situations set in the past," with themes ranging from Dominican identity or universal culture.

"It’s the Carnaval’s plural nature, as a free expression of the people to express their creativity."
