Plastic surgery malpractice deaths or tourism health boom envy

Santo Domingo.- The Public Health Ministry affirmed Tuesday that Dominican Republic has high quality surgical services and professionals with safe practices, but always recommends that patients visit reputable clinics.

The statement comes in the heels of various reports from the U.S. of Americans who’ve suffered severe injuries and even deaths after plastic surgeries in the country.

Dominican Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery Society president Héctor Herrand said post-surgery infections occur in all parts of the world, including the U.S.

Hs said the reports come from interests which seek to deride the country’s boom in health tourism. He didn’t specify what interests could be behind the imformation.

For his part haematologist and Plaza de la Salud General Hospital director Julio Amado Castaños Guzman said Dominican authorities must investigate the allegations, since the reports jeopardize the health sector, and should ask the agencies involved for detailed information.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported early March 16 confirmed cases of U.S. women who suffered serious micro-bacterial infections after undergoing plastic surgery in Dominican Republic in the past 12 months.
