Rosario recalled that the emission of the card and its first replacement is free, and that the document will be valid for 10 years. He stressed that the new document is safe and contains several mechanisms for verifying its authenticity.

"When a person goes to a center for the issuing of the new ‘cedula’, he should take a photocopy of his birth certificate, or all of the information of his birth registration in order to facilitate the search in the system," Rosario pointed out.

Last Monday, President Danilo Medina was the first Dominican citizen to receive the new ID card.
